Hair Today......Bald Tomorrow

Dear Blogger Family and Friends,

A warm welcome and big hug to one and all. I missed you last week....and it feels good to be back in friendly territory.

"The person who knows how to laugh at himself will never cease to be amused."
-Shirley MacLaine

I do not generally indulge in celebrity gossip, but I couldn't let this one slip away. If you don't already know, singer Britney Spears recently shaved her head....on purpose. Although many critics think this was just the latest publicity stunt by the controversial celebrity, I think most of us level-headed observers realize that this poor girl is up to her eyebrows in emotional turmoil, and needs medical attention more than media hype.

And yet, that one single act, by a desperate young woman, hit a sour note with many people...in fact you could say it hit an exposed follicle! Come on, what's the fuss about? After all, we cancer survivors are the real trend-setters, compliments of chemotherapy. We have written the book on being bald.....and, it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Personally, I think it's very liberating. You never worry about "bed head" or "hat hair." And, I can't remember the last time I looked for a comb! In fact, I'd say that all the media coverage over Brit's "trendy new look", has spoiled some of our fun. I think that any profits from her locks (being sold on Ebay) should be donated to cancer research. What do you think?

O.K....let's change gears and switch to something a bit more humorous.
My sister Rosie sent me a list of the ten first-place winners in the International Pun Contest. Thanks Rosie, I know these puns will make the party circuits....
Laugh & enjoy:

1) A vulture boards an airplane, carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at him and says, "I'm sorry, sir, only one carrion allowed per passenger."

2) Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says, "DAM!"

3) Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly, so they lit a fire in the craft. Unsurprisingly, it sank....proving once again that you can't have your kayak and heat it too!

4) Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says, "I've lost my electron." The other says, "Are you sure?" The first replies, "Yes, I'm positive."

5) Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocain during a root canal? His goal: transcent dental medication.

6) A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said, "I can't stand chess-nuts boasting in an open foyer."

7) A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named, "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain; they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal!"

8) A group of friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good fathers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close, but they ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and thrashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that only Hugh can prevent florist friars.

9) Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail, and, which gave him bad breath. This made him (Oh, man this is so bad, it's good)...a super calloused, fragile mystic, hexed by halitosis.

10) And finally, there was the person who sent ten different puns to all her blogger family and friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh.....No pun in ten did....(smile)

"Always laugh when you can. It is cheap medicine."
- Lord Byron

Dear Blogger Family & Friends,

I think these difficult times have helped me to understand better than before how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes around worrying about are of no importance whatsoever.

This Thing Called Love

You gotta give a little,
Take a little,
and let your poor heart break a little.
That's the story of,
that's the glory of love!

You gotta laugh a little,
Cry a little,
until the clouds roll by a little.
That's the story of,
that's the glory of love!
The Glory of Love - Lyrics by Billy Hill

Love, love, love......I love Valentine's Day. I love the fact that an entire day has been set aside just to celebrate L-O-V-E! I love everything it stands for and all the memories it evokes. First crush. First kiss. First love. I love the thought of people being giddy, gushy and googly-eyed. I love jewelry, chocolates and flowers and anything else that can be stuffed into a love-filled package. Put on some Barry White and I'll become your love slave!

On Valentine's Day you cannot ignore your emotions any more than you can ignore fireworks on the 4th of July. It's not just about hearts and red balloons, but also romance and emotional connections. You know that old expression, "wearing your heart on your sleeve." Love has a way of bringing all our emotions to the surface, especially on this special day. And, if your heart has been broken, don't get discouraged. Love will find you again. Love always finds its way, if you are open to it.

There are many ways to demonstrate your affection on Valentine's Day, whether you're a late bloomer or a seasoned player. While there are no laws about what's right or wrong, I strongly discourage "handshakes." I think a soft kiss or a warm hug are more appropriate for the occasion. Of course, the kiss has to fit the situation......such as an affectionate kiss on the cheek, playful kiss on the forehead, gallant kiss on the hand or a lustful lip-lock. Then, there's the continental double cheek kiss, polite air kiss, sloppy baby-drool kiss, spit-swap kiss, french kiss, and, the all time favorite, ambush kiss that you never saw coming but enjoyed none-the-less.

Whatever you do......don't fake it.....it has to come from the heart. I repeat, DO NOT FAKE IT!!!!!! You have 364 other days of the year to lie, but not on February 14th! Love is pure.....Be sweet, be tender......Be tactful and sincere. And, if words fail you, write a love note.....or, better yet, let Hallmark do the talking. It can't hurt and will probably help.

Having said all that, The Pink Crusader is playing the role of "Cupid" this week and proudly presents "Love Notes" from you and yours. To quote the Beatles,"all you need is love....love is all you need."Let the Lovefest Begin!

To Tony: You are still my #1 Valentine after all these years. I hope you bought me a nice present. Happy Valentine's Day! Love, Josie

Be happy for the coming Valentine's Day. I went to the cemetery to see mother today. She joins me in wishing all of you and your families, the happiness you deserve and sending all our love. Mom and Daddy

To our Dad: Happy Valentine's Day! You're the glue who keeps us all together. We Love You! Love, Josie, Tony, Rosie, Joey, Mimi, Jim, Cindy, David, Grandchildren & Great-grandchild Trent

Some other way
Love’s simple, and may
We simply seize our day?

Yes! Yes! It’s all of this:
A bit confused and Heaven’s bliss
Ah, love, let’s not chide and miss
Redemption in a tender kiss

Things Past, Present and Future

Dear Blogger Family & Friends,

As always, I welcome you with a big smile and a warm hug. Hope you are all doing well and feeling as wonderful as you are!

This week I had the pleasure of attending a "big-girl" slumber party, hosted by my friend Rosemary. It was so much fun to turn back time and become 12 years old again. Try to imagine 8 grown women running around in pink pajamas, wearing tiaras, eating pizza, making friendship bracelets, and doing each other's nails! And, let's not forget learning to "Belly Dance in 10 Easy Lessons"........First, there is nothing "easy" about it unless you can move like Shakira or Brittany Spears. Second, we danced like we were having a group seizure. And Third, we all needed chiropractors by lesson six! It was a night for the record books and I thank Rosemary and company for the fabulous (and outrageous) experience. In fact, I think the world would be a better place if more people had pajama parties on a regular basis.....(tiaras and belly dancing optional).

If you're tired of the winter weather and in need of a "feel-good" experience, I highly recommend a heavy dose of "Dream Girls." This movie is a sure-cure for the winter blues! It's a groovy combination of Motown, disco and funk! (It's also a great retrospective of all my hair-do's and hair-don'ts from the 60's - 80's. Yes, the good old days before chemo turned me into Uncle Fester.) I now want to buy the cd, because I can't get the music out of my head!

There are many upcoming events in our future, and special thanks to all who contributed this week. I encourage more of you to share your stories, comments, words of wisdom, or newsworthy items with other members of the cancer community. Just send me an e-mail and I will post it right here in my weekly update.

VALENTINE SPECIAL: If you have a special message for that special someone in your life, and want the world to know, let the "Pink Crusader" publish it in the holiday edition of this blog spot. You know where to e-mail your mushy, gushy, words of love! thepinkcrusader1@aol.com

FYI: We continue to have technical problems with the "COMMENTS" section of the blog, but I can manually post comments if you send them to this address: thepinkcrusader1@aol.com

O.K., get your pen, take notes, and add the following to your social calendar:

From Cheryl Donlin:

I wanted to alert you that the stamp info previously posted on your blog is outdated. The value of this stamp today for first-class mailing is .45 cents. Of that, 6 cents goes to breast cancer research. I actually went to the post office to check it out, because on the usps website, it says this stamp is not available. That is incorrect, according to the post office personnel, who sold me a sheet of the stamps.

There is quite a history on this stamp. It originally came out in 1998. According to the usps website: "The Breast Cancer Research stamp is the first U.S. stamp in history to have its net proceeds above the cost of postage earmarked for research organizations. It is called a "semipostal" stamp."

Interestingly, after receiving a request from Hungary in 2005, the U. S. Postal Service agreed to share this design with Hungary for use in their breast cancer fund raising. Check out this link for more on this: www.usps.com/communications/news/stamps/2005/sr05_048.htm.

For background on the original stamp check out: www.usps.com/communications/news/stamps/2006/sr06_024.htm.

Note to Cheryl: Thank you so much for bringing this error to our attention. I apologize to our readers for posting outdated information.

POST SCRIPT: Several people have questioned my husband's reaction to the belly dancing lessons......Well, knowing me, he was not surprised. However, he did wonder why the neighbors didn't have us arrested for public indecency or disturbing the peace. I explained that Rosemary's neighbor was a cop.....who sent his wife over to take pictures. End of story.
