-George Carlin

O.K.....Things are getting a bit crazy right now.....not unlike a circus. With only 4 weeks to go before the public debut and Launch Party for The Faces behind Breast Cancer, we are struggling, juggling, and plugging along as we whittle away at our checklist. There's a lot of behind-the-scenes hocus pocus ...and those last minute glitches will get you every time! Somebody help us, please! Anyone know how to pull volunteers out of a hat? Our ultimate goal is to raise tons of money for M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, so keep the RSVP's, book orders and donations coming!

This week, the Pink Crusader would like to introduce you to our party Sponsors and Table Vendors.

We are delighted to have Cellcosmet of Cellap Switzerland as our primary sponsor for this fabulous launch party and fund raising event. Cellcosmet is a division of Cellap Laboratories, experts in Swiss Cellular and Phyto-Cosmeceuticals. Their extensive hypoallergenic skin-care products (for men and women) are derived from virgin, cold pressed, organic plant oils and are especially soothing and therapeutic on sensitive skin that has been altered or damaged by aging, illness and environmental factors. The Pink Crusader personally found their skin-care products to be beneficial following radiation and chemotherapy treatment after developing sensitivity problems secondary to cancer treatment. Cellcosmet products are sold in the United States exclusively through Sak's Fifth Avenue. Locally, you can visit the Cellcosmet counter at Saks in the Galleria Mall. Party Bonus: Everyone will receive a lovely goodie bag of complimentary Cellcosmet and Cellmen sample products, following the luncheon.
APPLAUSE FROM THE CROWD!!!!!

In addition to Cellcosmet of Cellap Switzerland, we are grateful for the generous contributions of the Houston Marriott Westchase for providing
us with wonderful services, gorgeous facilities, and personal attention to every detail as party plans continue to evolve. Special thanks to Barry Berlin, Melanie Campbell and Rob Cope (of Swank Audio & Visual) for their time and collective efforts on our behalf.
Reminder Book your hotel room before August 10th, if you want to take advantage of the reduced rate of $69.00 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. $149 for Monday evening.

We are also grateful to be~Lie~ve (formerly OPAm Breastcare Boutique), specialists in assisting women to feel and look good following breast disease diagnosis, surgery and treatment. be~Lie~ve's product lines range from bath products and candles to pocketed clothing, sleep ware, and accessories.Their products have been advertised in magazines such as Lucky, 002Houston, ICON and Dallas Modern Luxury, and include items from American Breast Care, (manufacturer of the mastectomy T-shirt bra collection as well as the first ever strapless/convertible mastectomy bra), Still You Fashions (makers of pocketed sleep/lounge wear and the first ever breast form that can safely be worn in a hot tub), and Lymphedivas (first-ever fashionable medical grade lymphedema sleeves in a variety of colors and patterns) which are a personal favorite of The Pink Crusader. We must also mention the one-of-a-kind silk thread and gold bracelets by Beth Orduna which are sold exclusively through this boutique. Party Bonus: be~Lie~ve will also have favors for everyone who stops by their table. YIPEE!

Hi Josie, how are you? Hope you are feeling better . All tests came back clear. Need to go back in three months for retesting. That week was so stressful I just went into hiding a little and so did Rogers. We were at the hospital four days in a row. I thank GOD for this moment...this second which is what we all have. - Janice

Penny Andrea-Einmo:
Everyone was surprised and happy to see Penny at the Rosebuds II meeting this past Thursday. After undergoing a bilateral mastectomy on July 9, she was already back on her feet and cracking jokes with the gang. We wish her well with her follow-up testing and treatments.

From Donna Fong:

At a recent Rosebuds meeting, I mentioned that I finished reading the book, "Ten Prayers God Always Says Yes To" by Anthony DeStefano. A passage in the book touched me....on page 154.

"St. Paul said that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Hope is often the most important gift we can impart to each other. When you suffered a great deal and yet managed to emerge with our strength and hope intact, you can be of tremendous assistance to each other."

There were a lot of prayers in his book that gave me encouragement and I hope that it will do the same for you. Hugs, Donna

Personal Note: Thanks to Mary and Donna for taking the time to share
something of value with all of us.

Countdown Alive...Week Number Five!

Dear Blogger Family and Friends,

A big Texas "howdy" to one and all. How about a super-sized smile to go
along with that side order of hugs! As always, we look forward to your
weekly visit and thank you for stopping by! Now, grab a seat and get
comfy because we have loads to catch up on!

"Life has meaning only in the struggle. Triumph or defeat is
in the hands of the Gods. So let us celebrate the struggle!"

- Swami Sivananda

Perhaps we should pick up where we left off last week.....I believe it had
something to do with a PARTY!!!!!!!! Yep, that's it.... And with another
week tucked under our belt, the countdown stands at 5 weeks before
the public debut and Launch Party for The Faces behind Breast Cancer! YIPEE! Our goal is to raise tons of money for
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, so please keep the RSVP's and book orders coming!

This week, the Pink Crusader thought it might be fun to give you a
"sneak peek" at the Party Program. We are delighted (and very fortunate)
to have breast cancer advocate Patricia Jennings as our keynote speaker.
In addition to being a vibrant, dynamic woman and IBC breast cancer survivor,Mrs. Jennings has most recently worked to get the New Mexico legislature to approve $3.3 million for IBC (Inflammatory Breast Cancer) research, in collaboration with M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. She is a true "she-ro" and shining example of how one person can make a difference. I should also add that she is the mother of five children and the wife of Senator Tim Jennings of New Mexico. How does she do it???????

Along with Patricia Jennings, we are pleased as punch to have guest speakers (and breast cancer survivors) Cheryl P. Donlin, from Pink Ribbons Project, speaking on behalf of the female participants in the book, and attorney Douglas Ustick speaking on behalf of the male participants. Cheryl and Doug are extremely active within the local cancer community and are known to many of you through their volunteer and outreach efforts. You may also recognize their names as co-hosts of a recent series of featured breast cancer programming on KPFT radio's "Open Journal," in affiliation with Pink Ribbons Project.

The program will follow-up with a special Tribute Video to the Faces behind Breast Cancer, produced and edited by friend and Marquette alumnus, Blane Smith of WABC, New York. Blane's mother is a breast cancer survivor and we appreciate the beauty and sensitivity of his artistic montage. Unfortunately, Blane will be unable to attend the party due to a scheduling conflict, but number one son, Dalip, will be on hand to introduce the video on Blane's behalf.

We will conclude our luncheon with a spirited and uplifting vocal performance by Michael Richards and the M. D. Anderson Celebration Singers, followed by a book signing event and media opportunity to meet the author, photographer and participants in the book.

Don't forget, everyone will receive a lovely goodie bag compliments of our generous sponsor Cellcosmet of Switzerland. Plus, you will have plenty of time to browse, bid and buy a huge selection of items at the Silent Auction and Vendor Bizarre. Tempting, isn't it? Then go for it, my little babies!

Okay, the oxygen supply is getting low....need to have something to talk about next week. We'll meet again....same time, same place!

For information regarding Invitations, Hotel Accommodations, Book Orders
and Payments, please refer to previous blog posts dated July 8th and July 15th.

Personal Note: Our heartfelt thoughts remain with friend and fellow survivor, Julie Maas. Julie was released to home hospice care this week
and we ask you to join our prayer vigil for her and her family.

This week's Written Contributions were submitted by friend and
co-survivor Marsha Yeager and long-time friend and co-worker Cecile Lavoie:

Marsha writes:

It seems we all over extend with responsibilities and put so much pressure on ourselves to achieve "everything." Coincidentally, I was reading an article in "O," Oprah's magazine, about how to stop worrying and how to give yourself a break. I liked this quote and so I am passing it on to you:

"There is nothing that wastes the body like worry, and the one who has
any faith in God should be ashamed to worry about anything whatsoever."
-Mahatma Gandhi.

Here is another one, a reflection, suggested by the Dalai Lama: "If you have some fear of pain or suffering, you should examine whether there is anything you can do about it. If you can, there is no need to worry about it. If you cannot, then there is also no need to worry."

Well, now... that is pretty good advice for all of us - Blessings, Marsha

Cecile writes:

SAVE YOUR FORK

There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal
illness and had been given three months to live. As she was getting her
things "in order," she contacted her pastor and had him come to her house
to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes. She told him which songs
she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and
what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the
pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly
remembered something very important to her.

"There's one more thing," she said excitedly.

"What's that?" came the pastor's reply.

"This is very important," the young woman continued. "I want to be
buried with a fork in my right hand."

The pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what
to say.

"That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked.

"Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the pastor.

The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story,
and from there on out, I have always done so. I have also, always tried
to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of
encouragement. In all my years of attending church socials and potluck
dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were
being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.' It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming...like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!' So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder 'What's with the fork?' Then I want you to tell them: 'Keep your fork ...the best is yet to come.'

The pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young
woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would
see her before her death, but he also knew that the young woman had a
better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven
would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much
experience and knowledge. She knew that something better was coming.

At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and
they saw the pretty dress she was wearing and the fork placed in her
right hand. Over and over, the pastor heard the question "What's with
the fork?" And over and over he smiled.

During his message, the pastor told the people of the conversation
he had with the young woman shortly before she died. He also told
them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. The pastor
told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told
them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.
He was right.

So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you ever so
gently, that, "The best is yet to come."

Personal Note: Thanks to Marsha and Cecile for taking the time to share such lovely thoughts and inspirational words with all of us. We hope you will also pass them on to others who may benefit.

Spice Up Your Health With Everyday Seasonings
July 19, 2007

It's exciting to see the increasing focus of research on the health benefits of everyday spices like capsaicin for prostate cancer, turmeric to reduce inflammation, or ginger for nausea, to name just a few. A recent Wall Street Journal article reported how several plants abundant in China are being studied as a potential source of medicines by drug company Novartis AG. It's no surprise. Herbs and spices, derived from various plants, have a long history of medicinal use in Chinese medicine. So what else is there in the spice rack that we can use to "healthify" our meals in a delicious way?

"Everyday spices are an amazing source of phytochemicals, which are plant compounds with extraordinary healing properties," explained Jonny Bowden, author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth (Fair Winds). "Many of these spices have been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years, and Western medicine is just beginning to realize their potential." Here are a few of Bowden's top picks for powering up your foods:

CINNAMON
Let's take another look at cinnamon, for example. "There are anti-inflammatory compounds in cinnamon that can be helpful in alleviating pain, stiffness and even menstrual discomfort," said Bowden. "Additionally, compounds in cinnamon increase the ability of the cells to take in sugar, which is how it effectively lowers blood sugar and reduces the need for higher levels of insulin." A study published in Diabetes Care showed that cinnamon lowered not only blood sugar, but also triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes. Though it's not always the case with our other plant-based remedies, with cinnamon the inexpensive supermarket variety is basically as good as any of the pricier oils and extracts sold in specialty stores.

GINGER
Then there is ginger, known as the "universal medicine" in Ayurvedic medicine. Daily Health News readers have already heard about using ginger to soothe an upset stomach and quell nausea. (See Daily Health News article from December 9, 2003). In fact, in one study on ginger root, it was shown to be as effective as Dramamine in holding seasickness at bay. Ginger also packs plenty of powerful antioxidants, Bowden told me. "And animal studies show that ginger has antimicrobial effects and helps boost the immune system as well."

TURMERIC
Turmeric -- the spice Bowden waxed most enthusiastic about -- is a member of the ginger family, and also a heavy hitter in health benefits. "It's as close to a magical substance as you're likely to find in the kitchen cupboard," he told me. He attributes this spice's anti-inflammatory properties to "curcumin," which is also responsible for making Indian food and curry dishes yellow. In India, turmeric is used to treat arthritis precisely because of its ability to lower inflammation, Bowden said, noting that research indicates that curcumin also may have an anti-tumor effect. If you're not an Indian food eater, you can try it in rice dishes or even on eggs. Do not use medicinal amounts of turmeric during pregnancy, though, because it stimulates contraction of the uterus.

OREGANO
Another spice touted for its health properties is oregano, which Bowden tells me "has been shown by research to have 42 times more antioxidant activity than apples and 12 times more than oranges." Oregano contains a powerful cancer-fighting compound called rosmarinic acid as well, and its anti-inflammatory properties make it useful in supporting joint function. Oregano is also a source of calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron and potassium.

GARLIC
Of course garlic is not always used as a spice, but it does have a well-deserved reputation for adding flavor and boosting health. One of the oldest medicinal foods we know of, it is recognized even by conservative mainstream medical professionals as being helpful in reducing cholesterol. Bowden cited a study that found garlic reduces triglycerides by up to 17%. It has a small but notably positive effect on blood pressure. "In places where the consumption of garlic is high, there's a decreased risk of stomach and colon cancer," Bowden added.
Some other spices that have health-promoting properties include...
Cardamom. Another member of the ginger family, cardamom is in spiced chai tea and used to flavor Turkish coffee, and is added to baked goods in Scandinavia. It stimulates digestion and flow of bile.

Mustard seeds. These are a source of magnesium and selenium, and can be taken orally to stimulate appetite and circulation, and to help neutralize inflammatory materials in the GI tract.

Parsley. A good source of vitamin K and potassium, and also helpful for detoxification.

Rosemary. Contains lots of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, plus substances that help prevent the premature breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that's vital for memory and healthy brain function.

Sage. Contains rosmarinic acid (like oregano), which is both an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory, along with thujone, which can be protective against salmonella and candida.

Thyme. Helps relieve chest and respiratory problems, including coughs and bronchitis.

MORE THAN A PINCH?
Since many of the research studies on these items used high doses of them, I asked Bowden how much of each is needed to make a difference. The answer varies, he said, but usually more than is typically used for seasoning is required to achieve a notable benefit -- though it seems logical that adding a variety of spices, more often and in plentiful amounts, would have a cumulative positive effect. Though some of the dried spices retain their healthful properties, usually fresh herbs are nutritionally superior -- not to mention delicious, and fun and easy to grow. (You can read more about creating your own herb garden in the Daily Health News article from April 6, 2004.)

One thing that is especially nice about Bowden's recommendations is the fact that all of these spices are common flavors you can add to all sorts of foods -- they're easy to find and don't require a refined palate to enjoy. So go ahead and spice up your menu -- your food will taste more interesting and you'll feel better, too.

Jonny Bowden, a certified nutrition specialist, is the author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth (Fair Winds) and the forthcoming The Most Effective Natural Cures in the World (Fair Winds). His free audio course on
7 Super Foods is available at www.jonnybowden.com.

Countdown Continues...6 Weeks to Go!

Dear Blogger Family and Friends,

Welcome, welcome, welcome! If you're looking for a free hand-out of warm smiles and big hugs, then you've come to the right place! Make
yourself comfortable and I'll be with you shortly! I'm right in the middle of
blowing birthday kisses to my sister Cindy, niece Alison, cousin Frank and friend Rosemary Barr!

"Blessed is he that has reached the point of no return and knows it,
for he shall enjoy living."

- W. C. Bennet

Things are definitely heating up in Houston....and it's not just the weather! We're talking party, party, and party! Judging from the
initial RSVP returns, it appears that many of you will be in town to
celebrate the public debut of The Faces behind Breast Cancer,as well as to help raise money for
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Bravo! The more the merrier, so keep those response cards coming!

LAUNCH PARTY UPDATE
The official countdown to the Launch Party continues; We are now 6 weeks away from the public debut of The Faces behind Breast Cancer! Can
you smell the excitement in the air? I thought so! The Pink Crusader will continue to provide party updates on a weekly basis as things move forward, including Guest Speakers, Event Sponsors, and the wonderful Vendor Bizarre. We will also post details of various Media Coverage as well as local & national Book-Signing events.

Invitations
Because the Launch Party is a fund-raising event for M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, our goal is to accommodate everyone who would like to attend. At the moment we are limiting the number of paid guests (per invitation)to 6, but may have additional seating as the party date gets closer. We'll keep you posted.

Payments
Friendly Reminder: Please enclose payment for guests and pre-orders
with your RSVP. Checks are payable to: J. Sethi. Books will be held for
pick-up at the party, or forwarded by USPS after August 26th.

Waiting List
For those of you interested in attending the party but have not received
a formal invitation, please contact me if you feel there was an oversight.
In addition, we have a "Waiting List" which we will refer to as seats
become available due to cancellations. We ask for your patience and understanding during the process.

Silent Auction
Many of you offered to donate an item for the silent auction. We thank everyone for their generosity and hope you will follow-up with your pledge as soon as possible. Also, we are in need of several experienced volunteers (preferably non-participants)to work the silent auction tables. Any takers?

Out of Town Guests and Participants
Hotel Accommodations - More Rooms Added!

at the same time. We have requested and confirmed additional rooms at the $69 rate for Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and $149 rate for Monday. The discount code is FBBC. Cut-off date for these rates is August 10th(unless the rooms are sold out first).

It appears that we have resolved the problem with Marriott's toll-free
central reservation number. You can once again book your rooms by
dialing 1-800-228-9290 or contact the Houston Marriott Westchase
directly at 713-978-7400. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Transportation
There is shuttle service (Super Shuttle) available from George Bush (IAH) Airport to the Marriott Hotel at a cost of $28. The Marriott Hotel provides
free shuttle service from its premises to the beautiful Galleria area of the city.

Pre-Orders
The Faces behind Breast Cancer

This week's Written Contribution submitted by Janice Duplessis.

PEOPLE COME INTO YOUR LIFE FOR A REASON

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real, but only for a season!

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.
- Author Unknown

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you are a reason, a season or a lifetime. - Janice

Personal Note: Janice underwent testing this week in follow-up to recent brain surgery. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she and
her family await the results.

Update from Penny following bilateral surgery.
Penny writes:

Looks like I made it through the dreaded surgery on Monday, and was "ejected" from my hospital bed Wednesday afternoon after the breast surgeon pronounced me as "doing well". So now the rest of recovery will take place at home... which you know is in an RV travel trailer!! And for a while I will be pretty sick of those 'Flat Stanley' jokes (tee hee). Yes, I now have a completely flat chest, which is a huge variance from my having spent so many years with those heavy gals on my chest. It should be a
relief in many ways. That was an instant 15 pound weight loss!!

Anyhow, I can talk about it now, but I was pretty traumatized for a
while. I was very pleased with the entire staff that cared for me, and
my surgeon was great! I had several visitors in the hospital including
Donna and Jackie, and I got some lovely gifts and flowers too. I arrived home to find the most gorgeous exotic flower arrangement you could imagine from my cousin Chris and her husband and father... what an
uplifting surprise that was!!

I am not in as much pain as I had expected... it is more of a major discomfort with all the drains and lines dangling and tangling, and not
being allowed to take a real shower until the stitches are removed.
There are pangs of pain when I move wrong, and I tire easily. I also
notice a lot of areas of numbness and nerve damage, but I guess that
is to be expected with all that cutting. The coming days, weeks, and
months will tell me more about what I face with healing.

I was fitted for lymphedema sleeves in case I need them since I am
at a very high risk of developing this nasty side effect. And I have a camisole that has pouches to fit little protective pads in the chest area,
as well as pockets to hide the drains. Dr. Ricardo, my breast surgeon,
said I will hear from her immediately when she gets the results of the pathology reports. My future treatments will all hinge on those results,
of course.

Well, thanks for keeping me in your thoughts and meditations/prayers
and let me now go crawling back to bed. I think I have overdone it here
on the keyboard, as my arms are aching now. I will keep the updates
coming when there is news to share. Love, Penny

Personal Note: Penny's trauma did not end with her surgery. Unfortunately while being wheeled to her car following discharge from the hospital, Penny and several other patients and staff members were trapped in an elevator for nearly a half hour before being rescued. Thankfully no-one was injured, although Penny referred to the incident as, "something out of a Hitchcock movie!" You can forward get-well wishes to Penny at
penny-e@juno.com.

From Donna Fong:

Have you ever bought a Breast Cancer Research Stamp? I bet you
have - 773 million of them have been sold since the stamp was
introduced in 1998. The net proceeds go to federal breast cancer
research, and it's raised over $55.5 million for critical research work.
It's the top-selling commemorative stamp in U.S. history!

Right now, two bills in Congress could reauthorize the stamp -
or make it permanent! - but only if they pass. If the stamp isn't
reauthorized or made permanent by December 31, 2007, it will be lost,
along with its millions of dollars for breast cancer research.

Please join me in sending a message to Congress today!

Countdown to Launch Party

Dear Blogger Family and Friends,

Mid-summer greetings to each and every one of you! The Pink Crusader welcomes you with smiles, hugs and a kiss on your sun-drenched cheek!

"Fly free and happy beyond birthdays and across forever, and we'll meet now and then when we wish, in the midst of the one celebration that never can end."

-Richard Bach

LAUNCH PARTY UPDATE:
The invitations are out and the official countdown to the Launch Party has begun; Only 7 weeks remain until the public debut of The Faces behind Breast Cancer! Keep an eye on your mailbox for your ticket to one of happiest events of the year! Seating is limited, and by invitation only, so please return your RSVP as soon as possible. The Pink Crusader will continue to provide party updates on a weekly basis as things move forward. We will also post listings for media coverage and future book-signing events. The excitement is building and we want you to come along for the ride!

Invitations
We gratefully acknowledge and thank Laura Chandler for creating and donating the gorgeous invitations, which are "suitable for framing" (per Rosemary Herron) and, I agree! In addition to Laura's artistic philanthropy, I must also thank the dynamic team of ladies who donated their time and lovely penmanship to hand-address each and every invitation: Rosemary Barr, Laura Chandler, Cheryl Donlin, Donna Fong (and her magic pen), and Rosemary Herron. Thank you all so much....especially for maintaining steady hands in the midst of a Tornado Watch!

Waiting List
Because this Launch Party is also a fund-raising event for M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, our goal is to accommodate everyone who would like to attend. For those of you who expressed interest in attending the party, but did not receive a formal invitation, please contact me if you feel there was an oversight. In addition, we have a "Waiting List" which we will refer to, as seats become available due to cancellations. We ask for your patience and understanding as we go through the process.

Some folks informed me that they were having problems with the Marriott toll-free number. If that is the case, I would suggest you contact the Houston Marriott Westchase directly to book your room at 713-978-7400.

Transportation
There is shuttle service (Super Shuttle) available from George Bush (IAH) Airport to the Marriott Hotel at a cost of $28. The Marriott Hotel provides free shuttle service from its premises to the beautiful Galleria area of the city.

I have begun a journey
On a trip I never planned
But on the way were others
Who took me by the hand.

They said "We are your sisters"
I thought, "How can this be"?
And yet it wasn't long
Till the kinship I could see.

Although sometimes I am afraid
And the way seems to be long
Someone says, "I'm here for you"
And once again, I'm strong.

So blessings come from adversity
And strength can come from fear
And sadness melts with these few words
"Don't worry, we are here."

Thank you, my new sisters,

MASTECTOMY HOSPITAL BILL in Congress

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterwards. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days after surgery.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached.

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on. PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below. You need only give your NAME, ZIP CODE and EMAIL. http://www.lifetimetv.com/health/breast_mastectomy_pledge.html

This takes about 2 seconds. PLEASE PASS THIS ON to your friends and family and, on behalf of all women...THANKS!!

From Penny Andrea-Einmo:

From a nurse: "I'll never forget the look in my patients eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast. I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies.

"So there I sat with my patients, giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank You' they muttered."

Please send this to everyone in your address book. The Power of One

Dear Blogger Family and Friends,

Happy Sunday, and every day thereafter! As always, the Pink Crusader welcomes you with a fist full of smiles and a pocketful of hugs! May your week sparkle as bright as the fireworks on the 4th of July!

"Though government has an important role to play in meeting the many challenges that remain before us, we are coming to understand that no organization, including government, will fully succeed without the active participation of each of us. Volunteers are vital to enabling this country
to live up to the true promise of its heritage."

-President Bill Clinton

In preparation for Independence Day and all the joyful celebrations and traditions that mark this unique holiday, we cannot forget the individual contributions of the original founding fathers that came together and brought forth this nation.

The cancer community is not unlike the nation (or world) in which we live. The components needed to keep things balanced and moving forward are very much the same. The spirit and determination of one person can bring amazing results in obtaining and keeping anything of value; yet, when you have many individuals coming together in a common spirit combining efforts and trying to reach similar goals, the end results are all the more amazing!

Whenever possible, I try to volunteer my services to various cancer groups in support of a cause, fund-raiser or special event. The more I volunteer, the more I become entrenched. The more I become entrenched, the more I am inspired. The more I am inspired, the more I want to volunteer. One act perpetuates into another and the end result is tremendous self-satisfaction from doing something positive for someone else.

I admit that being a volunteer does take time, effort and personal commitment. And, there really is no fame or fortune for the glory-seekers. However, if you have ever thought about lending your time in support of a particular cause, but felt some hesitancy about the expectations, I hope you will reconsider.

The very nature of being a volunteer implies that you give freely of yourself...within your comfort level and within your time constraints. Don't over think the process. Anything and everything is greatly appreciated. The more you give, the more you will get in return. It's a great way to meet people of varying backgrounds and have a hand in making a difference within the community. Never underestimate the value of your personal contribution. Never underestimate the power of one.

The Optimist Creed
by Christian D. Larsen

Be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

Talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.

Make all your friends feel there is something in them.

Look at the sunny side of everything.

Be as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

Forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

Give everyone a smile.

Spend so much time improving yourself that you have no time left to criticize others.

Be too big for worry and too noble for anger

Personal Note:
Thanks to Robyn Stein for this week's contribution, The Optimist Creed.

Good friend and fellow Rosebud, Rosemary Barr writes:
Dear Pink Crusader,

Though the 4th of July, Independence Day, has passed I want to share an
e-mail that I received from a school friend. It was sent to my
Brookline High School Class of 1957 list-serve by our Class President.
I went all through school with Fred, kindergarten though 8th grade
(elementary school) and 4 years of high school. I might add that Fred
was also President of our high school graduating class. I followed his
suggestion and I will reread the Declaration of Independence again
several times.

I had the good fortune to grow up in Massachusetts amidst many of the
historical locations and memorabilia from this vital time in our
history. When I visit "home" and revisit many of these places in
Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts and throughout the City of Boston,
I am still overwhelmed by the thoughts and feelings I experience when I
visualize and consider what took place on what I think of as "hallowed
ground".

I join Fred in suggesting that we all take the time to reread the
Declaration of Independence and pause and remember what this Declaration
gave to us. Unfortunately the true meaning and significance of July
4th, Independence Day, has been lost by so many of us as we think of it
as a day off from work to attend barbecues, parties and go shopping.

Peace and Blessings,
Rosemary Barr

P.S. I delight in my ongoing connection with many of my high school
friends and acquaintances after all these years. For the first time in
several years I will not participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the
Cure® on October 6, 2007 inasmuch as while you are walking/running in it
I will be in Massachusetts attending my 50th high school reunion with
many other members of Brookline High School Class of 1957. Really
looking forward to it. It's been 5 years since I have been "home" in
Massachusetts!

Subject: [BHS57] I offer you an important experience
I would like to offer all an opportunity for an important life moment.
This July 4th, on that day, read the Declaration of Independence. Don't
scan it, read it all the way through. Then just be quiet for a few
minutes and savor it and realize what those folks did, the odds they
faced in doing it, and the decency with which they went about it.
( "...pledge their lives, ... and sacred honor..") Unbelievable!
I do it every year and it actually moves me to tears. If only we could
recapture some of the sincere sentiment expressed in that document and
that event!
Happy 4th of July to all.
Fred Wilcon

Personal Note: Thank you Rosemary, for sharing your personal story as well as helping to raise the level of appreciation, signigicance and understanding of Independence Day and Old Glory. Every now and then it is good to be reminded that freedom is a precious gift which we should not take for granted. And, please have a wonderful time at your 50th high school reunion. Travel and enjoy in good health!

Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act Update

From the NBCC (National Breast Cancer Coalition)
The environment and breast cancer: what to do about it? Help us make the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (BCERA) law! This bill will authorize the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to make peer-reviewed grants to collaborative centers to study environmental factors that may be related to breast cancer. If the environment has any connection to the cause of breast cancer, we need to know. Let's get the country behind this national approach to the issue. Because of NBCC grassroots advocates? hard work, BCERA has, in addition to its two lead sponsors, 63 cosponsors in the Senate and 250 in the House. That's great, but we need to take it to the next level.
NBCC is asking Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Sen. Mike Enzi (D-WY) to schedule BCERA (S. 579) for markup in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. There are then a number of options to consider in order to achieve passage. With the bipartisan support of the majority of both houses of Congress, as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) public commitment to pass it this year, one thing is sure - BCERA is moving forward, thanks to the hard work of NBCC and our grassroots breast cancer advocates.

Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation: Attention Action Network

As of now, we have 65 Senators and 251 House cosponsors of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S.579/H.R. 1157). Thank you for all your calls and faxes that have resulted in all these cosponsors. There are two key Texas Representatives who have not signed on as cosponsors that we need to target. Representative Michael Burgess office staff during a May 1st lobby day visit said the Congressman would sign on as a cosponsor which has not happened. The National Breast Cancer Coalition is also targeting all members of the Women’s Caucus that have not cosponsored. Representative Kay Granger is the only woman in Texas who has not cosponsored. So these are the two targets.

Groundbreaking Research

Y-ME Advocacy wants you to know your options when it comes to breast cancer.

Clinical trials, also known as research studies, are an important treatment option for breast cancer patients and are vital to continuing progress in the fight against breast cancer. The goal of clinical trials is to discover improved treatments that help cancer patients. Clinical trials provide newfound knowledge on cancer and make way for groundbreaking treatments and discoveries.

If you or someone you know is affected by breast cancer, Y-ME Advocacy encourages you to consider participating in a clinical trial. At the very least, clinical trials provide you with the current standard of treatment or a new, and possibly more effective treatment.

A few facts about people participating in clinical trials:

97% felt they were fully informed on risks and benefits
96% felt they were treated with dignity and respect
92% had a positive experience
91% would recommend a trial to others
Statistics from the 2005 "The Need to Know" survey, Coalition of Cancer Cooperative Groups

Visit http://www.y-me.org/information/clinical_trials/ and find out if a clinical trial is right for you! Contact our 24/7 hotline and speak with a Y-ME peer counselor and breast cancer survivor. The Sister Study

If you have not experienced breast cancer, but your sister has, you may qualify to participate in the Sister Study. The Sister Study is the only long-term study of women aged 35 to 74 whose sister had breast cancer. It is a national study to learn how environment and genes affect the chances of getting breast cancer. In the next 3 years, 50,000 women whose sister had breast cancer, and who do not have breast cancer themselves will be asked to join the study.

Current enrollment for the Sister Study has risen to more than 35,000, but that is still short of the 50,000 needed. Check out their site to see a video and find out if you or someone you know qualifies. http://www.sisterstudy.org/
